Biography:
“The band was formed in 1991 and after two demos, "Spoilt by Greed" in 1991 and "Hanging Down the Sounds" in 1993, they released their first EP, “Cognitive Sinergy” in 1997. In 1999, they self-released, the first album “Art Bleeds”. By 2004, the line-up consisted of the vocalist Adry Bellant, drummer Joe Laviola, bass guitarist Fredrick and guitarist Raff. In October 2004, the band was requested by AreaDeath Productions to donate their cover version of "1000 Eyes" to a Chinese Death tribute album “Unforgotten Past – A Tribute to Chuck Schuldiner” In January 2005, they signed to Mascot Records of Holland which released the second album, “Skymorphosis”, in 2006.
In January 2007, Bellant left the band and was replaced by Clode and in February, they toured with Amoral in Italy. Their third album, “Graveyard of Angels”, was released on April 6, 2009, by Mascot Records. After touring Italy to promote the “Graveyard...” album, Gory Blister began writing new songs. Guitarist / vocalist Karl Sanders from U.S. death metal band Nile joined the band to sing as a guest vocalist on two tracks for this fourth album. In April 2012 Gory Blister released via BeckerTeam Records, a division of Scarlet Records, their fourth album titled “Earth-Sick”, with a great new vocalist called John.
The new work containing ten new songs of pure, and Technical, Brutal, Death Metal in the style that has always distinguished the band over the past 20 years and it has been received enthusiastically by the media and fans. The band played several gigs in Italy to promote Earth-Sick as headliner and supported acts like Entombed, Sinister, and Obituary. At the moment the band have just released the fifth album of their metal career entitled “The Fifth Fury”.
Psycho Crave
The outgoing melodic rhythms bind together with a scourging gnarly vocal edge that is slightly blacker sounding than death although still flavor-some and hits the spot to some degree. The music does however deliver a feisty punch of rugged intervention.
Thresholds
Chugs and bristles through its towering structure that is harsh and unyielding with a sneaky bass hook and just as damming as the previous track and quite tenacious in its approach.
Toxamine
Stirring up a malevolent groove and a tempered rhythm alongside the gnarly vocal although until the riffs reach boiling point it is slightly non urgent but soon changes direction yet again and holds a somewhat feisty bait.
Devouring Me
A meandering gait, steely rhythm and stark beats this again gives a nudge in the direction of being more black metal based, than its death metal component, although mainly due to the vocal, be it a more restrained one.
The Fifth Fury
Revealing an even slower bait at the start it does fire up, but not to an overwhelming conclusion - more a mediocre one, and so this being the bands title track it does fall a little flat.
Prometheus Scars
Holding strange and sultry prowess the beats rattle off in mundane fashion and don’t really get fully under the skin to immerse the senses – it does turn slightly emotive further on in the track but not as enticing as other death metal bands seem to manage.
(Meet me) In The Mass Grave
The hooks contained in this track are a little more appealing as the guitar explores a slightly more rabid coaxing and a little more dominating than previously, especially with the influx of a squally riff that gives it tons more edge.
The Grey Machinery
A lot more dramatic in its delivery which is pleasing, but still not fully engaging as it boasts the same concepts as the previous tracks and does not show any real diversity.
Heretic Infected Orchestra
An eerie ambient flavor has been added to this track that does however show diversity in its wildest form of haunting keyboard runs and shows a darker side to its nature. It is a beautiful track made so by its orchestral leanings and totally unexpected, but a bit late on in the album to give it the all-out wow factor!
Summary:
For a death metal band this album is slightly disappointing – I was expecting so much more from a band that has been in operation since 1991, but maybe they have gone off the boil?
The tracks are mainly the same and anyone would be hard pushed to tell each one apart until the final one which is dramatic and edgy.
If I had to pick two of the tracks as favourites I would go for ‘Psycho Crave’ and ‘Thresholds’ mainly because of the fiery way they are both delivered and leaning towards the first track as it is a great title name for a track.
Although, I was expecting harsher tones with fiery rhythmic persuasion where by it is quite a restrained album that does not truly show the band off in any outstanding way and certainly does not fully engage with the listener so the focus tends to shift away from the music rather than pull you towards it.
Maybe it is one of those albums that needs further listens to fully appreciate its endeavours, but I am sadly not convinced.
6½/10
